local centres

Many genealogists have found real benefit in joining local history societies in areas of ancestral interest to them. The information gained from joining such societies can significantly help add 'flesh to the bones' of a basic family tree.

Although several local history societies are strictly archaelogical, many warmly welcome family historians to their membership. Some go out of their way to attract family historians to their fold. Those societies that are known to fall into this category are marked with the tag 'actively welcomes family historians' in the county-by-county lists on this website.

Other local history societies contain a family history section within their organisation. These are marked with the tag 'has family history section'.
