BOOKS ON MILITARY ANCESTORS

British Army

  Tracing your Army Ancestors (paperback)
Well written practical guide for anyone tracing their ancestors who served in the British Army. The book covers a broad scope which extends beyond the more usual attestation papers, pension and service records. There are numerous leads to archives, internet content and other publications. My only criticism is the lack of colour illustrations but this is a minor quibble given how fully the book is packed with practical advice.

  World War I

World War I Army Ancestry (paperback - 4th edition)

Taking into account the extensive loss of records in the 1930s and during World War II, this book helpfully identifies where a soldier's name would definitely appear (medal rolls, casualty lists, etc.). It examines a wide variety of other potential sources such as leave records, recruitment records, diaries, etc. This comprehensive guide provides numerous ideas and pointers to help in tracing ancestors who served in the army in the first world war.

  World War II

Tracing Your Second World War Ancestors
Although personnel and service records covering the second world war period are still held by the Ministry of Defence, there are numerous other records relating to World War II that are now in the public domain. These include casualty records, prisoner of war records, operational records, medal lists and a wide variety of other sources. These are fully covered in this comprehensive guide which covers the auxiliary services (including the merchant marine) as well as the army, air force and navy.
